Kuala Lumpur, August 28, 2025 —  In conjunction with the 68th Merdeka Celebration, UM Specialist Centre (UMSC) has set its sights on transforming healthcare delivery by embedding Value-Based Care (VBC) at the core of its patient care and business focus.

This milestone is marked by the launch of three flagship initiatives:

  • Paediatric Diabetes Clinic
  • QWard smart ward system
  • International Patient Centre (IPC)

These initiatives will position UMSC as a leading hospital in quaternary care in Malaysia.

Quaternary care is the “top shelf” of healthcare. A step above tertiary care, it refers to highly specialized treatments or surgeries that only a few advanced hospitals can offer, often involving cutting-edge technology or experimental procedures.

UPHOLDING THE MISSION OF MEDICAL EXCELLENCE

UM Specialist Centre (UMSC), Malaysia’s first privatized teaching hospital under Universiti Malaya, was founded to stem the brain drain from the public sector. Today, it continues to uphold its mission of medical excellence.

UMSC delivers value-based care that focuses on better outcomes and meaningful patient experiences. This builds trust, supports growth, and creates an environment where consultants are motivated to stay and raise the standards of care.

Datuk Zulkarnain Md Eusope, Chairman of UMSC, said: “Every one of our specialists is trained to the highest standards. They don’t just treat patients – they also teach, mentor, and shape the next generation of medical leaders. UMSC is more than a hospital; it is a living bridge between Malaysia’s healthcare legacy and its future.”

Puan Norzaiton Senusi, CEO of UMSC, added: “Facilities alone don’t make a great hospital; people do. Retaining top medical talent is essential. Every initiative we launch reminds our staff that their expertise matters and that the future of Malaysian healthcare is here. This August, in the spirit of Merdeka, we are reminded that the health of the people is the strength of the nation.”

PATIENT-FOCUSED INNOVATIONS AND INITIATIVES

Paediatric Diabetes Clinic

UMSC is recognized as Malaysia’s leader in paediatric diabetes care, with its in-house clinic setting a new benchmark under Professor Dr Muhammad Yazid bin Jalaludin.

  • Children with type 1 diabetes receive holistic support from a multidisciplinary team.
  • The clinic combines the latest technology with nutrition and psychological care to improve outcomes and quality of life.

QWard Smart Ward System

UMSC also leads in patient-centered innovation with the launch of QWard, its smart ward system.

  • Patients can order meals, stream Netflix or YouTube, and access medical records, test results, and treatment plans directly from their bedside.
  • QWard enhances comfort and engagement and helps patients make informed decisions.
  • It frees nurses to focus on care rather than routine tasks — a key step in easing Malaysia’s nursing shortage.

International Patient Care Centre (IPC)

To serve international patients, UMSC has expanded its presence in Indonesia with the International Patient Care Centre (IPC).

The move has boosted awareness, attracted more healthcare travellers, and reinforced Malaysia’s reputation as a regional hub for advanced care.

PRESTIGIOUS RECOGNITIONS

In 2025, UMSC earned several prestigious awards, including:

  • Corporate Excellence Award – Asia Pacific Enterprise Awards (APEA)
  • Most Recommended Super Speciality Tertiary Care Medical Centre Malaysia 2025 – World Business Outlook
  • Outstanding Contribution to Spine & Scoliosis Care in Southeast Asia – International Business Magazine

These initiatives and recognitions reaffirm UMSC’s role as a trusted destination for advanced, patient-centred care.

More importantly, they carry forward its founding mission: to keep Malaysia’s best medical minds at home, serving the nation.

This Merdeka, the message is clear — just as independence secured our nation’s future, retaining and nurturing our own medical talent secures the health of generations to come.
