Hollywood isn’t exaggerating when it comes to the immediate pain of a blow to the testicles. The pain is indeed severe and often debilitating!

  • This is because a man’s testicles are packed with sensitive nerve endings, making them extremely vulnerable to impact.
  • When struck in the groan, therefore, the man can experience pain that is so intense that it causes nausea, dizziness, and even fainting.

SHORT-TERM CONSEQUENCES

The immediate pain is bad enough, but the short-term consequences of testicular trauma can be even more serious.

The following require immediate medical attention to prevent long-term damage.

  • Testicular rupture
  • Separation of scrotal skin (degloving)
  • Severe swelling and bruising
  • Internal bleeding
  • Dislocation of testicles into the abdomen

LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES

The consequences of severe testicular trauma can extend far beyond the initial injury.

  • Infertility
  • Testicular atrophy or shrinkage
  • Chronic or long-term pain
  • Increased risk of infection

While infertility is possible, it’s not a guaranteed outcome.

  • So long as one testicle remains undamaged, sperm production is still possible.
  • Thus, the man can still father children provided that there are no other issues affecting his fertility.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A MAN RECEIVES A TESTICULAR TRAUMA

If you or someone you know experiences a blow to the groin, follow these steps.

  1. Rest and avoid further trauma.
  2. Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling.
  3. Take over-the-counter pain relievers.
  4. Wear supportive underwear or jockstrap.
  5. Seek medical attention if pain is severe or persistent. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection.

PROTECTING THE FAMILY JEWELS AGAINST TRAUMA

While a single blow can cause significant testicular trauma, repeated minor impacts over time can also cause significant damage.

  • This is particularly relevant for athletes in contact sports such as soccer, rugby, boxing, mixed martial arts (MMA), etc.
  • Each impact, no matter how small, can contribute to cumulative trauma. This can potentially lead to chronic pain, reduced fertility, or other long-term issues.

Therefore, wearing appropriate protective gear is essential for those engaged in high-risk activities or contact sports.

  • An athletic cup is the most common and effective form of protection.
  • However, it’s crucial to ensure the cup fits properly to provide maximum protection.

Other protective measures include:

  • Wear compression shorts or supportive underwear.
  • Use proper technique in sports to minimize risk of impacts.
  • Be aware of your surroundings in everyday situations.
