Liposuction has evolved far beyond its reputation as a purely cosmetic procedure, emerging as a precise, technology-driven solution for body contouring. A consultant plastic surgeon brings us a closer look at one such solution: the VASER liposuction procedure.

THE STORY SO FAR…
When we think of liposuction, we are likely thinking of the procedure known as suction-assisted liposuction or SAL:
- A small tube called a cannula is inserted under the skin to loosen and remove unwanted fat.
- The procedure usually starts with a larger tube to target deeper fat layers.
- Once the deeper fat is removed, a smaller tube is used to fine-tune and smooth out the fat closer to the skin’s surface.
- The loosened fat is suctioned out through the tube, helping reshape the treated area.
Other methods of liposuction include:
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, which involves the use of sound waves to break up fat in the targeted area, so the fat is easier to remove via suction.
- Power-assisted liposuction, which uses a vibrating tube tip to break up fat in order to make it easier to be suctioned out.
Unwanted Side Effects and ComplicationsBecause liposuction is popular, there is a growing prevalence of unlicensed liposuction procedures that use outdated or unsafe SAL technology, often performed by someone without proper training. People going to such procedures put themselves at risk of complications such as:

VASER LIPOSUCTION: SAFER AND MORE EFFICIENT?
VASER stands for vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance.
It is a type of ultrasound-assisted liposuction; it uses ultrasound energy for minimally invasive fat removal.
Dr Jagjeet Singh shares that the following are some of the advantages of employing VASER liposuction:
- No big cuts or incisions, just tiny cuts of a few milimetres, so there are fewer risks of serious scarring, bruising, infection, and other complications.
- This technology targets fat cells selectively while preserving surrounding tissues, reducing trauma.
- VASER first liquifies fat in the targeted area before removal, thereby ensuring greater precision with less pain and downtime.
- Additionally, the ultrasound waves stimulate collagen production, enhancing skin retraction – an advantage for patients with mild skin laxity as this may reduce the need for further skin-tightening treatments.
Dr Jagjeet adds that the VASER procedure is especially effective for people looking for natural, high-definition results with minimal downtime.
